This is a collage I created using some pieces I had drawn using a variety of materials. This particular piece went through many compositional changes, until I finally landed on this completed composition. My initial idea was to create a piece that could be altered and therefore not permanently attaching the pieces.
After much deliberation, I decided to permanently attach the pieces and once I decided to do so, the composition came together to what I now present to you.
I started working on this piece while my mom was ill and finished it after her passing. Her passing initiated many pieces dealing with loss and grief and these pieces allowed me to express that grief.
I decided to use colors that are bright as a homage to my colorful culture, and objects you would typically find on Dia de los Muertos altars, these altars serve as a reminder of those we have lost, they unite us in our grief and give us hope that their spirits are not too far from us.
